Multi-environment deployment is the practice of maintaining separate instances of your application for different stages of the development lifecycle. At minimum, teams maintain development, staging, and production environments. Larger organizations may add integration, QA, pre-production, and performance testing environments. Each environment serves a distinct purpose in the pipeline from code commit to production release.

Why Multiple Environments Matter

A single production environment is not sufficient for reliable software delivery. Developers need an environment where they can push code and see changes immediately without affecting other team members. QA engineers need a stable environment that mirrors production for testing. Allowing manual configuration changes that are not tracked in version control, which creates configuration drift. And treating staging as optional, skipping it for "small" changes.

Common Multi-Environment Mistakes
