DNS Nameservers Records Resolver
Look up A, CNAME, TXT and MX records for a domain.
01 / How it works
Understanding Your DNS Query Results
This lookup displays DNS records currently broadcasted by your domain's authoritative name servers. If records are missing, verify that your domain registrar is pointing to the correct nameservers and that zone files match host records.
The Developer Guide to DNS Records and Propagation
How Domain Name System (DNS) Works
DNS acts as the phonebook of the internet, converting human-readable domains (like example.com) into numerical IP addresses. When a domain is requested, a recursive resolver queries authoritative nameservers to fetch the matching IP mapping.
Primary DNS Record Types Explained
- A Records: Maps a domain name to an IPv4 address.
- AAAA Records: Maps a domain name to an IPv6 address.
- CNAME Records: Canonical name record. Maps an alias domain to a target host domain.
- MX Records: Mail Exchange. Specifies the mail servers responsible for receiving email on behalf of the domain.
- TXT Records: Arbitrary text records. Typically used for domain validation (Google Search Console) and email security protocols (SPF, DKIM, DMARC).
- NS Records: Nameserver records. Defines which servers hold authoritative DNS zone data for the domain.
Managing Propagation Delays
When you update a DNS record, the change is not instant. Global resolvers cache DNS queries for a duration defined by the Time-to-Live (TTL) parameter. If a TTL is set to 86400 seconds (24 hours), resolvers may continue returning the old IP address for a full day before fetching the update.
02 / FAQ
Questions, answered.
What is DNS propagation?
DNS propagation is the time it takes for global DNS servers to update their cached IP mappings after you change records at your registrar.
What does TTL mean in DNS records?
Time-to-Live (TTL) is a setting in seconds that tells DNS caching servers how long to store the record details before checking for updates.
How do SPF, DKIM, and DMARC protect domains?
These protocols are configured via TXT records to authenticate outbound mail, preventing email spoofing and spam associations.
What is the difference between an A record and a CNAME?
An A record maps a domain directly to a numeric IP address, while a CNAME maps an alias domain to another domain name.
How do I flush my computer's DNS cache?
On Windows, run "ipconfig /flushdns" in the command prompt. On macOS, run "sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder" in the terminal.
Why is my newly purchased domain throwing DNS errors?
New domains can take up to 24-48 hours to propagate nameserver records globally, or nameservers are not assigned.
What is Anycast DNS?
Anycast DNS routes DNS requests to the closest physical server node in a global network, minimizing latency and improving security.
Can I have multiple CNAME records for the same subdomain?
No, RFC specifications dictate that a CNAME record cannot coexist with other records for the same host prefix.
